La Tomatina en Reno August 2010 @ The Club Cal Neva

Friday, June 4th, 2010

It was, at the very least, one of the most interesting events on Reno Nevada’s 2009 event calendar. And this August, the Club Cal Neva, in association with the American Cancer Society will produce La Tomatina en Reno 2010; The Nation’s Biggest Tomato Fight for the second consecutive year.

The tomato fight will take place Sunday, August 29, 2010 at 10 North Virginia Street (City Plaza) at 3:00 p.m. Festivities will commence with a street faire and live entertainment on Saturday, August 28, 2010 on Virginia Street between First and Second Streets starting at noon and ending at 7:00 p.m. The street faire will continue on Sunday from noon until the start of the tomato fight.

The Club Cal Neva and American Cancer Society are urging attendees to get their tickets for the event early. Tickets can be purchased for $10.00 in one of several ways. Participants can either: 1) pay by credit card by calling the Club Cal Neva at 877.777.7303 (or locally at 775.323.1046), 2) visit the Club Cal Neva’s event page and pay via Pay Pal (a waiver must be downloaded and signed before the event), 3) sign up for the event on Saturday, August 28 at various locations inside the Club Cal Neva or on Virginia Street at the La Tomatina Street Faire, or 4) sign up at the same locations on Sunday, August 29 before 2:00 p.m. Due to an expected crowd of around 5,000 participants this year, the Club Cal Neva is urging attendees to not wait until the last minute to sign up as they may not get in to participate or get caught standing in extremely long lines.

“Last year we were rushed at the very last minute with ‘tomato throwers,’” said Phil Kenny, vice president of the casino. “This year, if you get your tickets early, it won’t be a problem.”

With about 10 minutes left before the tomato fight, roughly 1,000 people were standing outside the Plaza fencing waiting to pay, sign the waiver, and get in. This year the Club Cal Neva will have two entry points and a staging area for those who purchase their tickets ahead of time which Kenny said should make it a lot easier for participants to get in.

Kenny also said that since this event looks to surpass last year’s event with twice as many participants, the Club Cal Neva has sought twice as many tomatoes. Through a generous donation from Del Mar Farms in Stockton, Calif., this year’s tomato fight will use more than 150,000 pounds of tomatoes. That translates to roughly one million Roma Tomatoes.

“We’ve been looking forward to this event since about 7:01 p.m. on August 29 of last year,” said Kenny. “Last year was unbelievable. But this year, well, it’s going to even better.”

“This event is so much fun and we hope that we’ve started a tradition in Reno that will eventually rank right up there with Spain’s event and give other events in the downtown area a run for their money,” said Club Cal Neva Chief Executive Officer Jeff Siri.

Interesting Tomato Facts:

•  According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Americans eat more than 22 pounds of tomatoes every year.

•  More than half this amount is eaten in the form of ketchup and tomato sauce.

•  Tomatoes contain Lycopene, a carotenoid (plant pigment) that, as an antioxidant, protects against cancer.

•  Have a tomato with your Burger! When a source of Vitamin C (tomato) is eaten with meat or cooked dry beans, the body makes better use of the iron in the protein food.

Ketchup was originally a fish sauce originating in the orient

La Tomatina en Reno 2009

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Saturday was a great day for the first ever La Tomatina en Reno! The sun was shining, downtown Reno was alive with music and food and people enjoying the afternoon. Then things got messy…

Tomatoes are good for the body and events like this, when you combine having fun with friends and a great community, are good for the soul. You raised a lot of money for the American Cancer Society and from the looks of it had a great time doing it!

We had 50,000 pounds of tomatoes dumped into the plaza on the river @ 10 North Virginia Street, and it was all we could do to hold back the crowd long enough for everyone to get in. As soon as the largest food fight Reno has ever seen started tomatoes flew and hung in the air like a thick red fog.

The fight lasted almost an hour and would have continued into the night if we had let it. Reno has amazing stamina for events like this, and that makes if even more fun! Even spectators on the street and in our parking garage were targets of tomato sharpshooters on the plaza.

Thanks for coming out! Thanks for coming in costume! Thanks for making this event even more “off the hook” than we’d hoped! And thanks for helping us raise money to fight cancer.

If you took pictures @ the event you can add them to the Flickr group or post them to our page on Facebook. Got any video? Tag it with TomatinaReno on YouTube or post a link in the comments, we’d love to see them!

Top 10 Uses for a Tomato

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

That aren’t so great…

Here at Club Cal Neva we are always trying to improve the guest experience, and recently we became aware of the amazing benefit to a diet rich in tomatos. So we thought there might be some other areas of life where tomatos could help out. Below are the results:

#10 Tomato Beer Pong

While fun, tomato beer pong lacks the long term potential for success in the realm of beer sports. Any margin gain in ping pong ball savings is eaten up in carpet shampooing costs.

#9 Tomato Blackjack

Though tomatos are a colorful addition to any table game, currently no venues in reno will exchange a beer for a tomato…

#8 Tomato Roulette

Unfortunately, the physical properties of a tomato make the random action necessary in a roulette ball a little too unpredictable. It was continually hard to determine the value of the final resting place of the tomato on the dial. We had to discontinue tomato roulette almost as soon as it started.

#7 Tomato Golf

No amount of skill can improve performance and the short game tends to be messy.

#6 Tomato Assault

Though throwing tomatos at your boss can be extremely satisfying in the short term, eventually Dennis got mad, and payback was unpleasant.

#5 Tomato Racquetball

Early testing proved this to be quite similar to throwing tomatos at Dennis. It was actually more effective at tomato assault than tomato raquet ball.

#4 Shot Gun Target

This is where things got interesting. Tomatos are biodegradeable, cheep and can be used as a healthy snack on a hot day in the desert. However, they can’t hold a candle to clay pigeons for shot gun targets.

#3 Shot gun as SKS target

An SKS is a powerful machine gun. While it is always fun to shoot one, tomatos don’t provide the drama and explosiveness to really showcase the SKS’s power.

#2 Tomato Beer

Useful as a hangover cure, this is what we call the “all natural” version of a bloody beer. Still, after having it on the menu for a whole week, we didn’t sell any and ended up with a bunch of tomatos that were only good for one thing…

#1 BEST USE FOR A TOMATO: La Tomatina En Reno

Throw a tomato, and save a life. The American Cancer Society and Club Cal Neva present: La Tomatina en Reno, August 29th, in Reno, Nevada at the Plaza on the River right next to the Club Cal Neva Casino.
